Sølvgade Kaserne – University of Copenhagen

Sølvgade Kaserne

Sølvgade Kaserne opened its doors for the first time in August 2016. Up until early 2013 the building was headquarter of DSB (Danish State Railways) and had been for over 84 years. It was originally part of the Sølvgade Barracks. In 2013 DSB moved to the suburb Høje Taastrup and Sølvgade was taken over by developers who have turned the building into a modern student residence containing over 400 rooms. The kollegium is to house both international and Danish students and PhD students from the University of Copenhagen.

The location does not get any better: you are just across from the lovely Kings Garden (Kongens Have), a stone’s throw from the Lakes and a 10 minute walk from both Nørreport and Østerport station.

All of the faculties of UCPH can be easily reached by public transportation or bike from Sølvgade.

Deciding whether Sølvgade Kaserne is right for you

Sølvgade Kaserne is a good option for the student who enjoys their privacy while at the same time having access to common facilities. Please bear in mind that common facilities mean common responsibilities, and you are required to participate in whatever common cleaning and maintenance tasks there may be in this regard.

Type of Accommodation

Sølvgade Kaserne is a modern residence located in an old and preserved building.  The building consists of 5 floors and contains a total number of 463 studio apartments, all of which are newly renovated.  The UCPH Housing Foundation has reserved 250 studio apartments in this hall of residence. The rest of the studios are rented out to Danish students from the University of Copenhagen. Some of the studio apartments are rented out as shared rooms. You always share a studio with a person of the same gender as yourself.

Note: 3 of the rooms in Sølvgade are quite small and do not have a kitchenette, but instead access to a common kitchen. These rooms are:

- V023
- V123
- V423

In addition to the studios, there are 2 common areas called "The Roof", where you can study or relax. "The Roof" has a kitchen with an oven, so you can also cook and eat there. "The Roof" is located in the top of both block 4 (Voldgade wing) and 6 (Sølvgade wing).

There are elevators in the building.

The studio apartments are between 17 - 34 square meters in size depending on room type.

Our various housing is not identically furnished; places have different sizes lay-outs and the furniture has been acquired at different points in time.

You are welcome to put in furniture of your own, BUT you are also required to remove it again upon departure - if you do not, the UCPH Housing Foundation will have to remove it on your behalf and forward the bill (easily a few thousand DKK) directly to you.

Each apartment has a private bathroom.

Each room has a private kitchenette. Basic kitchen utensils such as pots, pans, cutlery, cups, glasses and plates are provided. If any basic utensils are missing, please stop by the UCPH Housing Foundation. We have a small stock of different items and you are welcome to see if we have what you are missing.

Note: 3 of the rooms in Sølvgade are quite small and do not have a kitchenette, but instead access to a common kitchen. These rooms are:

Internet Connection and TV

A wireless internet connection will be available throughout the building. Furthermore, a LAN connection is available in each apartment.

The UCPH Housing Foundation does not provide you with a TV. By Danish law, everyone who has an internet connection must pay media license. This expense is not included in your rent.

Internet support

The internet provider is called Zibra. If you have problems with your internet connection, you can either send them an e-mail (helpdesk@zibrawireless.dk) or give them a call: +45 7873 7221.

The service is provided daily all weekdays from 8:00am – 8:00pm.

Sølvgade Kaserne is located centrally in Copenhagen and all of the UCPH faculties can be very easily reached. Nørre Campus is a 5-10 minute bike ride away. City Campus can be reached within 5-10 minutes by bike or 15 minutes on foot. To go to Frederiksberg Campus you can bike in 20 minutes or take the metro from Nørreport station. Søndre Campus is also a convenient 15 minute metro ride away. Please use www.rejseplanen.dk to see travelling times with public transportation and to plan your trip.

The UCPH Housing Foundation does not provide parking spaces in any of our residences. Parking is available in the surrounding streets, but due to the central location, finding a parking spot will be nearly impossible. If you decide to come by car, note that a parking permit is required and that parking in this area is quite expensive. The UCPH Housing Foundation does not recommend you bring a car.

Smoking policy in the Residence

Smoking and candles are strictly prohibited everywhere in Sølvgade Kaserne.

The price range including utilities (on-account) for a studio apartment is approximately DKK 4500 - 9000 per month (though not paid monthly), depending on room size.

If you use more than the on-account utilities allocated in your rent, you will receive a bill. If you use less, you will receive a refund.

You can see the precise rental amount of an option in the online system.

Applying for housing subsidy

Since the rooms in Sølvgade Kaserne have private kitchenettes, it is possible to apply for housing subsidy if you live in this residence and if yo are renting the entire studio for yourself (so not possible if you live in a shared studio).
